Yoga for Hormonal Balance in Women Over 35

Working closely with women over 35, I have witnessed to the significant impact yoga may play in promoting hormonal balance during this critical stage of life. Particularly when women approach perimenopause and beyond, hormonal variations can result in symptoms like mood swings, exhaustion, irregular cycles, weight gain, and sleep difficulties. Even while these changes are normal, they don’t have to be too much to handle.

Yoga supports the endocrine glands and calms the neurological system, providing a gentle yet effective way to manage these changes. The thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands, all important regulators of hormonal health are regulated by regular practice of certain asanas such as Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), and Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall Pose).

Breathwork, or pranayama, is just as important. Techniques like Bhramari (humming bee breath) and Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) help lower cortisol levels, enhance emotional stability, and improve sleep quality.

In addition to its physical advantages, yoga helps women develop a stronger sense of self-connection, which many start looking for in their mid-30s and later. It becomes more about focusing, slowing down, and paying attention to your body than it is about striking the ideal stance.

I often encourage clients to use their yoga mat as a secure place to decompress, think, and refocus. Over time, even 20 minutes a day of focused breathing and movement can make a big difference.

Essentially, yoga is a self-care practice that helps women over 35 feel more balanced, rejuvenated and confident despite all the hormonal changes life brings.
